Sonic Screwdriver by Toukejin Sonic Screwdriver by Toukejin
Partially accurate (had to take some liberties) prop reproduction of the 10th Doctor's sonic screwdriver.

I used a lathe for the first time on a few of the details, pretty happy with how it turned out. And I still hate cutting square holes or slots or anything not drill-bit-shaped. Bah.

Update 2011.10.20:
OK, so I may be making a bunch more of these, I just need enough people interested to justify buying a big expensive lathe. If you want one, please let me know, and watch my blog for more updates. [link]

This is pretty exciting.

I WOULD TOTALLY BUY ONE. But please say that they would be much less than $450 apiece, because I'm not made of money, but I am made of love for this sonic screwdriver ._. so if you start making these, SERIOUSLY, I will consider buying. =D

Oh gosh, I would never charge that much for that thing. I'm making a dozen or so of the newer, more refined version [link] and they're going to be $95 each. Check out my blog for more information and email me if you're interested.

The current version (a little different from this one) is going to be $95. Go here [link] for more information. I'm still in the process of making them, and I have a full-time job, so it'll be a while though.

Posting a Flickr link on dA might be crossing the streams, but here's the test shell: [link]

The grip will be covered in black plastic and the innards have been reworked. I'll post it here with all the details when it's officially finished.

I'm making at least ten of them if anyone is interested. *wink*

Cool, just tell me when you're ready to sell more. A price would be appreciated too. BTW, I think yours is the best screwdriver on the market. All of the proffessional ones look like cheap toys, and the fan made ones look like theywere made out of play-dough. Yours however, is simply amazing! I hae to have one! My collection will not be complete without it!

Well, you should! I've never seen a prop like that! Itz the epitome of Awezome! Besides, I'm a HUGE Doc. who fan, and David Tennant was my fav. So even if he didn't get his own screwdriver design, his is still my fav. But yeah, you're talented! I wish I had a talent like that!

I never really thought about doing a tutorial. My methods are pretty crude anyway: hack at it with a file until it looks finished.

I love your sonic screw driver. would you still be able to do commissions of any other designs? and have you ever had luck with adding sound? I haven't found a custom sonic screwdriver with sound as of yet.

I hated getting light in there enough already. Space is tight inside a 1.5" lightsaber, it's nonexistent in a 0.75" sonic screwdriver. If someone could work out an elegant way to do the wiring and switch then I'll give it a go, but for me this is the stuff of nightmares.

With no electronics, $30~$50 depending on what exactly you want. Unless you have a design that just looks really easy to wire, I don't think I can give you light or sound.

How do you cut/work the metal? I've been wondering for a while about how to do this.
Reply
:icontoukejin:
Toukejin Featured By Owner Mar 5, 2011
This is the first thing I actually built in a real metal shop. The cuts were done with a hinged bandsaw, the overall shape was done with a lathe, and the windows and slots were made using a drill and a series of hand files.
