Sonic Screwdriver MkII by Toukejin Sonic Screwdriver MkII by Toukejin
So at long last I've finally built a sonic screwdriver I'm happy with.

This is the MkII prototype, built of machined 6061 aluminum and solid acrylic with a touch of paint and enamel. It runs on an A23 battery and has a blue LED in the base that is automatically powered when the slide is extended (photos of that as soon as it gets darker out).

Check the blog out for more photos and contact me if you're interested in buying one; I'll be making a run of a dozen or so in the next few weeks.

I'd buy it but the only problem I have with it is that the Sonic Screwdriver on the show has a sort of marble-y sandy texture on the slider section, might be nit-picking though. Looks spectacular otherwise!

Lovely finish, looks very utilitarian and sturdy.
A proper tool worthy of a Timelord.

Please let us know when you manage to get sound! I have been to your website and seen that you were working on it and that you are a very busy man (especially with taking on the projects of the light sabers as well). Any way I have emailed you and can not wait until you manage to make the sonic screwdrivers sing! :D

Oh and how far do you have to extend it before the light comes on?

Illumination is pretty much immediate. I can go out and measure one, but I would say within the first quarter inch or so.

Its truly a beautiful custom prop and I'll buy one next month if you still have one on hand

Just wondering about battery life and the durability of the emitter
What is the word on that?
(I'm buy one regardless of your answer)

I don't actually know about battery life since I've never run one completely down before. I'll pull up the figured and calculate a theoretical battery life in a bit.

As far as durability, the acrylic rod runs through the entire emitter right up to the dome on the end, so it should be pretty solid. The metal piece itself should be plenty strong as well. Here's a fairly thin one holding up a 17lb bucket of nails. [link]

The only thing you really have to watch out for is scratching and scuffing, since aluminum is such a soft metal.

Yep. I make them in batches and have at least a couple unclaimed. They're $95 each. If you're interested, email me or check out the blog for more information.

I'm not sure how dA feels about talking money in the comments, but I've just updated the blog to include the official price. Check it out there and email me if you're interested.

I don't think dA really minds, they get a lot of people posting items that go up on their etsy all the time.
Hmm, a blog...let me run that down.
